Catalysis underpins the global economy, with ca. 60% of all commercial processes reliant upon a catalytic reaction at some stage in the life cycle. The positive benefits of catalytic manufacturing processes include reduced energy costs and minimised waste streams. This project will examine the use of sustainable, renewable non-toxic catalysts, and energy-reduced processes, for the manufacture of a range of novel chemicals for adoption by end-users in academia, pharma and agrochem.
The successful applicant will gain skills in analytical chemistry (including NMR, mass spectrometry), purification technology (including chromatography) and preparative chemistry. A strong interest in catalysis and synthetic chemistry, coupled with an enthusiasm for experimental work is essential. Applicants should have a minimum 2:1 in Chemistry.
Enterprise and collaborative partners
This Masters by Research is a collaborative research project between Lancaster University, with supervision from Professor Joe Sweeney, and Apex Molecular. Apex Molecular is a UK based chemistry contract research organisation (CRO). Their core services include synthetic medicinal chemistry support for pharmaceutical and biotechnology based drug development companies a global specialist in Chiral Chemistry, producing chiral small molecules for biotech/pharmaceutical R&D.
