Recycling lives is a social enterprise, operating a recycling and waste management facility, which supports and sustains charitable programmes for offender rehabilitation, residential support and food redistribution. Around 850,000 tonnes of Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) is produced in the UK every year, providing a challenge but also an opportunity for recycling sites across the globe. This research will aim to create an energy from waste process for use with this material. ASR is produced during the shredding and sorting processes employed in end-of-life vehicle recycling. This is an extremely challenging material to recycle and contains structural polymers used in vehicle construction, glass fragments and reinforcement materials.
Currently, ASR is disposed of in an energy intensive and costly manner. This research project will develop a process to generate energy for ASR waste. The successful candidate will construct a small pilot plant to test the mechanism and, if successful, this will be implemented on site and reduce Recycling Live’s energy reliance. The potential implications of this research are huge. Recycling Lives has an ambition to produce enough megawatts per hour to power their entire processing site. This technology could also have much wider implications on energy generation in the UK and overseas.
Applicants with a creative approach and background in an engineering discipline are sought. Those with a high 2:1 or first class degree are encouraged to apply.

This Masters by Research is a collaborative research project between Lancaster University, with supervision from Prof Alistair Martin and Recycling Lives. Recycling Lives combines business and charity. It operates a recycling and waste management facility, which supports and sustains charitable programmes for offender rehabilitation, residential support and food redistribution. The business has a strong social and environmental outlook.
