The Project

An estimated 844 million people worldwide do not have access to clean water and it is estimated that this, combined with poor sanitation, results in the death of over 500,000 children under 5 each year, with the problem particularly difficult in Sub-Saharan Africa. One key problem is the difficulty in testing water for microbial contamination; conventional testing takes 5 days plus the time taken to transport samples to a central lab and the time from sampling to result may be up to 6 days. By that time, a disease outbreak is difficult to contain.

This Masters by Research project aims to demonstrate a rapid testing system developed by Hygiena International Ltd, which will make a significant time difference in microbiological contamination testing for a range of environmental water samples.

Applicants should have a Microbiology (or related subject) degree with 2:1 or better. Previous experience of standard methods for bacterial enumeration and basic microbiology techniques (media prep, gram stain, aseptic technique, dilutions, cultures, etc.) is important. Experience with rapid microbiological methods is not essential, but beneficial.

Enterprise and collaborative partners

This Masters by Research is a collaborative research project between Lancaster University with supervision by Professor John Quinton, Professor Roger Pickup and Hygiena International Ltd. Hygiena provide the food, clinical and other manufacturing industries with rapid, accurate, dependable and affordable test platforms that address their diverse and expanding microbiology and food safety requirements.
